The Random Generator has spoken and we have a winner!

Congratulations to septemberrains whose favourite love story is "Frenchman's Creek" by Daphne du Maurier!

:throws confetti:

You know I get a major kick out of doing the give-aways because the recommendations that people give are awesome. My Amazon Wish List is bursting.

:beams happily:

I spent last weekend at the British SCBWI Annual Conference in Winchester. It's the second SCBWI conference that I've been to and was every bit as fascinating and enjoyable as last year's. The guest of honour was the awesome Marcus Sedgewick, who answered one of my questions without pointing out that I was an idiot (which I think was lovely).

I babbled at uber-publisher David Fickling, who probably thinks that I'm an idiot, but who was splendedly evangelical about the worth of picture books and is starting a movement to persuade parents of their worth. I for one obey my new picture book overlord.

Candy Gourlay, Keren David and Sarah McIntyre (aka jabberworks) converted me to giving Twitter another go by promoting unashamed social media promescuity. Anyone so minded can find me there at carolinehooton as I've reactivated my account.

This week was also special in that yesterday was my birthday. I am now 30-ohmygodseriouslybecauseyoulooksomuchyounger.

:pauses to take acclaim:

:finds no acclaim forthcoming:

:carries on:

I had to go into work, but it was really lovely actually. I had chocolate cake, which was nomalicious, a card, some lovely flowers and a version of happy birthday sung to me. And then I got to meet up with my mates uC, mR and M for Japanese food followed by cocktails and smutty innuendo. Fantastic.

All of this helped to make up for some worrying news on the job front that's emerged over the last week or so. Nothing to really report at the moment but like thousands of other people in the UK (and around the world) I'm facing a period of uncertainty, which makes things difficult.

The last 14 months have been a real period of flux for me and I'm not one of those people who thrive in periods like that. I like certainty and planning. I'm a bit of a control freak and I like to know roughly where I'm going, what I'm doing and when I'm getting there.

The one amusing thing to come out of it was when I was telling my mum what was going on:

Me: "But I suppose that if worse comes to the worst I can always come back to live with you and dad again."

:long uncomfortable silence:

Me: "Mum? Are you still there?"

:more silence:

Mum: "Yeah. About that. Are you sure there's nowhere else for you to go? It's not that we don't love you, darling, but we did only get rid of you a couple of months ago. Your dad and I were enjoying the lack of moodiness."

Me: "But ... moodiness is part of my charm."

Mum: "And the sarcasm."

Me: "Also part of my charm."

Mum: "And the swearing."

Me: " ... Fair point. I'll put you down as a 'maybe'."

In much more cheerful news I am so excited by the trailer for the COWBOYS AND ALIENS movie coming out next year:

Hey, happy birthday! A new decade!

Erm ... not quite. I was trying to be clever and managed to mislead people. My actual age rhymes with hurty-hive. So half way through the same crappy decade. :)

Nah - I've managed to be misleading. Actually I hit the semi-big 35. But I hear that 40 is the new 25 so that's okay.

*sigh* Another elevator pitch film title...
Nov. 20th, 2010 07:46 pm (UTC)
Yeah but ignore the title and focus on the coolness of having Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig and Sam Rockwell in a movie with cowboys AND aliens in it. How can you resist.

Happy Birthday! Welcome to the thirties, as it turns out its not so different to the twenties. Who knew?

How's KYBS coming?
Nov. 20th, 2010 07:52 pm (UTC)
I'm actually mid way though my thirties but many thanks anyway.

KYBS is still going slowly. I need to email my agent actually because it's going so badly. I feel like I'm sinking with it at the moment and am hating everything I come up with. It's making me very depressed and stressed.
