A cut above

I have another afternoon of editing to look forward to in my local Starbucks. Because I am completely incapable of doing anything at home apart from eat and watch TV, I've learnt the hard way that the only way to achieve anything with Teh Novel is to do my writing thang somewhere completely different. (And now I have a very disturbing mental image of a naked John Cleese sitting behind a desk and watching me write. Urgh.)

:shudders:

Yesterday was unofficial Agent Appreciation Day, so I wanted to post in belated appreciation of my agent - Catherine Pellegrino at Rogers, Coleridge and White.

I appreciate Catherine because she took a chance on me by offering representation on the basis of the first three chapters and because she seems to get what I want to do with my writing career. Catherine was one of 3 Dream Agents that I'd identified on the basis that the other writers she represents were doing work similar to what I would like to do - therefore to get her interest was a major personal thrill.

Editing wise, her comments are not prescriptive and they have made me think about Teh Novel in a different way, which is always useful. I'm still working through the manuscript (hence the trip to Starbucks) and hopefully we will see what will be in 2010.

The week has been another hectic one. I'm still trying to come up with an easier commute into London and am giving the Tube a try (there's a station near me in Uxbridge). So far (touching wood) it's not been too bad. It's cheaper, I can get a seat, the journey's not been delayed and I can get to a station next to the office without having to change lines. Plus I get an extra 20 minutes in bed each morning, which is a major bonus.

The commute has enabled me to beat my personal reading record. I've now read 73 books this year and am currently reading book number 74 - The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L. Sayers. One of the things I keep meaning to do is upgrade my LJ account to paid status so that I can personalise it a bit more and put in a Currently Reading box, so today I have bitten the bullet and done it. Of course, this is more interesting to me than it is to you, but hey - my LJ, my rules. :p

I do keep a separate book review LJ at quippe, which I use to keep track of what I've thought about each book I read (I like to keep it separate because it's easier to maintain that way) and although most of my reading is in the young adult and fantasy genres, I try to read different things to keep it fresh. Although saying that, I am on a major Dorothy L. Sayers kick at the moment, which means I'm wondering how I'd look in a monocle and trying to work out how to find my own Bunter.

:nods:

Christmas shopping is almost complete. The only person left is my mum and I am still stumped. I'm now thinking about something in the jewelery line, which is hysterical given that I don't actually wear much jewelery myself and so don't have the first clue of what to buy.

Speaking of Christmas gifts - thank you to the Nonny who bought me a virtual snowflake cookie.

Right, I should get going on Teh Novel because I'm going out for a Ruby Murray with uC, mR and others this evening, which I am v. much looking forward to.

For Jewellry have a look at Ortak at www.ortak.co.uk. Lots of styles, very well made and gift vouchers available.

Snap! I'm currently reading number 74 at the moment too. I've recently been on a Georgette Heyer kick - read nearly five in a row. I've got most of DLS too, but it's been a few years since I read the Nine Tailors. That was quite a good one, as I recall.

I can't write or edit properly at home either. It's such a nuisance. Bah.

Sayers!!! Oh Sayers is fabulous.

I also can't work at home very effectively - I love my Starbucks on the A3, and expect to spend some time there tomorrow.

You also remind me that I should start on The Unpleasantness At The Bellona Club soon.
